The Ultimate Minnesota Pool Opening Checklist for Spring

Minnesota family enjoying their backyard pool in spring

Spring in Minnesota means one thing for pool owners: it's time to wake that pool up. After months under a cover — surviving freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow loads, and everything a MN winter can throw at it — your pool deserves a proper, thorough opening. Done right, you'll spend the whole summer swimming instead of troubleshooting. Here's everything you need, in the right order.

Pro Tip from Dolphin Pool & Spa

Open your pool when overnight temps are consistently above 40°F — typically late April to mid-May in Minnesota. Opening early beats the Memorial Day rush and gives algae less time to establish before your chemistry is balanced.

1 Gather your supplies before you start

Nothing slows down an opening day like a mid-job run to the store. Have all of this on hand before you pull off the cover:

  • Water test kit or test strips
  • Pool shock (chlorine or non-chlorine)
  • pH increaser & decreaser
  • Total alkalinity increaser
  • Calcium hardness increaser
  • Cyanuric acid (stabilizer)
  • Algaecide
  • Pool brush & vacuum
  • Silicone O-ring lubricant
  • Teflon tape for fittings

2 Remove and clean the cover

Start by pumping any standing water off the top of the cover — don't skip this. Then clear leaves and debris with a leaf blower before lifting. Remove anchors or water bags from the edges, and carefully accordion-fold the cover toward one end of the pool with two people. Never drag it across concrete — that's how covers get torn.

Hose the cover down on a clean patch of lawn, treat any mold or staining, and let it dry fully in the sun before folding for storage. A damp cover stored in a bag is a cover that won't last.

3 Inspect for winter damage

Before touching any equipment, walk the entire pool and look for:

  • Cracked or popped waterline tiles
  • Heaved or cracked coping
  • Deck cracks or soft spots
  • Staining or discoloration on walls
  • Skimmer body cracks
  • Damaged return fittings

Minnesota's freeze-thaw cycles are brutal on tile grout, coping joints, and concrete. Catching damage now — before the pool is running — is far cheaper than discovering it mid-season.

4 Reconnect equipment and fill to level

Remove winter plugs from all plumbing lines and reinstall return eyeball fittings, skimmer baskets, and any hardware you stored for winter. Reinstall ladders, handrails, and diving boards. Lubricate all O-rings with silicone lubricant — never petroleum-based products, which degrade rubber.

Fill the pool to the mid-point of the skimmer opening (roughly halfway up the tile line). Don't start any equipment until the water level is correct — running a pump without water flow can cause serious damage in minutes.

5 Start up the filtration system

Prime the pump according to your manufacturer's instructions, then start it slowly. Listen for grinding, cavitation, or unusual sounds. Check every fitting and connection for leaks while the pump is running. Run the filter continuously for at least 24 hours before testing water chemistry — the water needs to be fully circulated for accurate test readings.

Heads up: If your pump won't prime, your heater won't fire, or you spot a significant leak — stop and call a professional before continuing. Running equipment through a failure can turn a small repair into a large one.

6 Test and balance your water chemistry

After running the filter for 24 hours, test your water and adjust each parameter one at a time — always wait at least 4 hours and retest between adjustments. Here are your target ranges:

Parameter Target Range Why It Matters
pH 7.4 – 7.6 Most critical — affects all other chemistry
Total Alkalinity 80 – 120 ppm Stabilizes pH from swinging
Calcium Hardness 200 – 400 ppm Prevents surface etching or scaling
Free Chlorine 1 – 3 ppm Your primary sanitizer
Cyanuric Acid 30 – 50 ppm Protects chlorine from UV degradation

Not sure about your readings? Bring a water sample into Dolphin Pool & Spa at 3405 Hwy 169 N in Plymouth — we offer free water testing with $50 in chemical purchases, and will tell you exactly what your pool needs.

7 Shock the pool

Even if your water looks perfectly clear, shock it at opening — every time. Over winter, bacteria and organic contaminants accumulate even under a properly closed cover. Use a quality pool shock at the label-recommended dose (or double-dose for a green pool), add it with the filter running, and let it circulate overnight.

8 Clean thoroughly

Brush all walls and the floor to dislodge any biofilm or early algae growth. Vacuum to waste to remove sediment from the pool bottom without running it through your filter. Clean and rinse your skimmer baskets. Backwash your sand or DE filter if pressure is elevated.

9 Complete your safety checklist

Before anyone gets in the water, take 10 minutes to verify:

  • All drain covers secure (VGB compliant)
  • Gate latches & fencing intact
  • Life ring / reaching pole in place
  • Pool alarms tested (if installed)
  • Diving board/slide hardware tight
  • Pool lighting functional

Dolphin Pool & Spa Reminder

Minnesota law requires that residential pools with attached spas have anti-entrapment drain covers meeting ANSI/ASME A112.19.8 standards. If your drain covers are older than 7 years or show cracks, replace them before opening.

That's it — nine steps and you're swim-ready for another great Minnesota summer. The whole process takes most of a day when done properly, and it pays dividends all season long. A well-opened pool is a pool that stays clear, stays balanced, and stays fun.
