You pull back the cover and there it is — a tear, a missing strap, a section that's given way entirely. Minnesota winters are hard on pool covers, and even a cover that went on in great shape last fall can come off looking rough in spring. The good news is that not all cover damage means immediate replacement. Here's how to assess what you've got, decide whether to repair or replace, and make sure your pool is protected heading into next winter.

Pro Tip from Dolphin Pool & Spa

Spring is the best time to shop for a replacement cover — not fall. By September our cover inventory is heavily picked over and installation schedules are packed. If you discover significant damage at opening, get on our list now so you have the right cover ready before closing season arrives.

1 Assess the type of damage first

Before you do anything else, lay the cover out flat on a clean section of lawn and take a good look at the full picture. Cover damage falls into a few distinct categories — and the category determines your next move:

What You See Likely Cause Repair or Replace?
Small hole or tear under 6 inches Sharp debris, ice stress, or wear Repair with patch kit
Torn or fraying edges Age, UV degradation, or dragging Repair if isolated, replace if widespread
Broken straps or buckles Freeze stress or age Replace hardware — cover may be fine
Damaged or stripped anchor bolts Corrosion or repeated freeze-thaw Replace anchors — usually straightforward
Multiple large tears or holes Cover at end of service life Replace — patching won't hold long
Brittle, cracked, or stiff material Plasticizers lost — material breakdown Replace — more failures are coming

2 Don't panic — the cover's job is done for this year

If you discover cover damage at opening time, here's the first thing to know: you can open the pool normally even with a damaged cover. The cover's job protecting your pool over winter is finished. The damage affects next fall's closing, not this spring's opening.

What the damage may affect right now is your water condition. If the cover had large holes or tears that allowed extra sunlight and debris in over winter, expect heavier algae growth and more chemistry work to get the water balanced. Be ready to shock aggressively and run the filter longer than usual before your first swim.

3 How to patch a repairable cover

For small holes, isolated tears, or minor fraying on an otherwise healthy cover, a good patch job can add years of life. Here's how to do it correctly:

  • Clean the area thoroughly and let it dry completely before patching
  • Cut the patch to extend at least 2 inches beyond the tear in every direction — round the corners so edges don't peel
  • Use a waterproof vinyl patch kit designed for pool covers
  • Apply firm, even pressure for several minutes after placing the patch
  • Allow full cure time before folding or storing — usually 24 hours
  • Note: patch kits work on solid winter covers; mesh safety covers need strap or panel replacement instead

Heads up: Patching a cover that's brittle, heavily faded, or more than 12 years old is usually a short-term fix at best. New failures will appear nearby. If you find yourself patching the same cover every spring, it's time to put that money toward a replacement instead.

4 Replacing straps, buckles, and anchors

Hardware failures — broken straps, snapped buckles, stripped or corroded anchor bolts — are common after a hard Minnesota winter and don't necessarily mean the cover itself needs to be replaced. Most safety cover hardware is available separately and is straightforward to swap out.

Bring your cover's brand and model into Dolphin Pool & Spa and we can help you find the right replacement straps and hardware. Getting the hardware right now means your cover will go back on correctly and securely next fall.

5 When to replace the cover entirely

Replacement makes more sense than repair when any of the following are true:

  • The cover has multiple large tears or more than two or three patched areas
  • The material is faded, cracked, or brittle throughout
  • The center has drooped significantly, indicating structural breakdown
  • The cover is more than 10 to 12 years old
  • Repair costs would exceed half the price of a new cover
  • The cover failed to keep debris and sunlight out this past winter

6 Choosing a replacement cover for Minnesota

If you're replacing your cover, spring is actually the ideal time to shop — inventory is at its best and you have months before you need it. In Minnesota you have two main options:

Cover Type Best For Key Consideration
Mesh safety cover Families with children or pets, most Minnesota pools Drains rain and snowmelt automatically — no cover pump needed
Solid winter cover Budget-conscious owners, pools without safety concerns Requires a cover pump — blocks all sunlight and debris

For most Minnesota families, a mesh safety cover that meets ASTM F1346 standards is the best long-term investment. They typically last 12 to 15 years, require less maintenance over winter, and provide the strongest safety barrier for families with children and pets. Stop in and we'll help you find the right fit for your pool size and shape.
