You've tested your water and you know what's out of range — now what? Balancing pool chemistry after opening is where a lot of pool owners get frustrated. Add too much of the wrong thing, skip a step, or rush the process and you can end up chasing your chemistry in circles for days. The good news is that with the right products and the right approach, getting your pool perfectly balanced is very achievable in a single afternoon. Here's exactly how to do it.

Why BioGuard Makes a Difference

Generic pool chemicals typically require you to wait up to 4 hours between doses before retesting — turning a one-afternoon job into a multi-day process. At Dolphin Pool & Spa we carry BioGuard, a professional-grade product line that only requires 15 minutes between doses. That means you can work through all your chemistry adjustments in a single session and have your pool swimmable the same day. Stop in at 3405 Hwy 169 N in Plymouth — we'll set you up with exactly what your pool needs.

1 The golden rules before you add anything

Before adding a single chemical, make sure these conditions are in place — skipping any of them leads to inaccurate results and wasted product:

  • Filter has been running for at least 24 hours since opening
  • Pool is filled to the correct operating level — mid-skimmer
  • You have accurate test results in hand — ideally from a professional water analysis
  • Filter is running while you add chemicals — never add to a still pool
  • You know your pool's volume in gallons — dosing is calculated per 10,000 gallons
  • You're adding chemicals one at a time, not all at once

Don't know your pool's volume? A rough calculation: length × width × average depth × 7.5 gives you gallons for a rectangular pool. For irregular shapes, ask us at the store and we can help you calculate it accurately — getting this right means your chemical doses will be accurate too.

2 Step one: adjust total alkalinity

Target: 80–120 ppm  |  Adjust first, before pH

Alkalinity is the foundation everything else builds on. Get this right first and pH becomes much easier to hold in range. Here's how to adjust:

If Alkalinity Is... BioGuard Product How to Add
Too low (under 80 ppm) BioGuard Balance Pak 100 (sodium bicarbonate) Broadcast evenly across the pool surface with pump running. Wait 15 minutes, retest.
Too high (over 120 ppm) BioGuard Lo 'N Slo (sodium bisulfate) Add in front of a return jet in small increments. Wait 15 minutes, retest. Never add more than needed.

Make your alkalinity adjustment, wait 15 minutes with the pump running, then retest. Repeat if necessary until you're in the 80–120 ppm range before moving on to pH.

3 Step two: adjust pH

Target: 7.4–7.6  |  Most critical parameter

With alkalinity in range, pH is much easier to dial in. pH affects the effectiveness of every other chemical in your pool — chlorine at pH 8.0 is only about 20% effective, while at pH 7.5 it's over 50% effective. It's the most impactful number in your water.

If pH Is... BioGuard Product How to Add
Too low (under 7.4) BioGuard Balance Pak 200 (sodium carbonate) Broadcast evenly across the pool surface with pump running. Wait 15 minutes, retest.
Too high (over 7.6) BioGuard Lo 'N Slo (sodium bisulfate) Add slowly in front of a return jet. pH is easy to overcorrect — add less than you think you need, wait 15 minutes, retest.

4 Step three: adjust calcium hardness

Target: 200–400 ppm  |  Protects your pool surfaces

Calcium hardness is often overlooked but it's critical for protecting your pool's surfaces, plaster, grout, and equipment. Water that's too soft will aggressively leach calcium from whatever it touches — your pool pays the price over time.

If Calcium Hardness Is... BioGuard Product How to Add
Too low (under 200 ppm) BioGuard Balance Pak 300 (calcium chloride) Pre-dissolve in a bucket of water before adding to pool. Add slowly near a return jet. Wait 15 minutes, retest.
Too high (over 400 ppm) No chemical fix Partial drain and refill with fresh water is the only solution. Call us for guidance on how much to drain.

5 Step four: adjust cyanuric acid

Target: 30–50 ppm  |  Protects your chlorine investment

Without cyanuric acid (stabilizer) in the correct range, the Minnesota summer sun will destroy your chlorine within hours of adding it. This is one of the most cost-impactful parameters to get right at opening — proper stabilizer levels mean your chlorine lasts dramatically longer.

If CYA Is... BioGuard Product How to Add
Too low (under 30 ppm) BioGuard Stabilizer 100 (cyanuric acid) Add slowly through the skimmer with the pump running. Allow 24–48 hours to fully dissolve before retesting — CYA is slow to incorporate.
Too high (over 50 ppm) No chemical fix Partial drain and refill required. High CYA locks up chlorine and makes it ineffective — don't ignore it.

6 Step five: bring chlorine to level

Target: 1–3 ppm free chlorine  |  Add after all other parameters are balanced

With everything else in range, now add chlorine. Adding chlorine to unbalanced water is inefficient and wasteful — pH and alkalinity directly affect how well chlorine works, which is why it always goes in last. For ongoing chlorination we recommend BioGuard Smart Sticks or BioGuard Silk Tabs (trichlor tablets) for your chlorinator or floater. For a quick boost at opening, use BioGuard Smart Shock or BioGuard Shock Complete.

7 Step six: shock the pool

Even with chlorine in range, always shock at opening. Winter accumulates bacteria and organic contaminants that regular chlorine levels alone won't fully eliminate. Shocking blasts free chlorine to a breakpoint level that destroys everything — bacteria, algae spores, chloramines, and organic waste.

We carry four BioGuard shock options to fit every situation:

Product Best For Swim Re-entry
Burn Out Extreme Heavy contamination, green water, serious opening conditions After chlorine returns to 1–3 ppm
Burn Out 73 Standard opening shock, moderately dirty water After chlorine returns to 1–3 ppm
Smart Shock Fast-dissolving, clean water maintenance shock 15 minutes
Shock Complete All-in-one fast-dissolving shock with clarifier 15 minutes

Add shock at dusk or at night with the filter running. Never add shock directly to the skimmer if you have an inline chlorinator — add it to the pool water directly, broadcast across the surface.

8 Add an algaecide as a preventative

Once your chemistry is balanced and you've shocked, add a preventative algaecide. At opening, even water that looks clear can have microscopic algae spores ready to bloom the moment temperatures rise. A preventative dose of BioGuard Algae Complete or BioGuard Back Up at opening gives you a strong head start on an algae-free summer — it's far easier to prevent algae than to treat it once it takes hold.

9 Retest after 24 hours and confirm balance

After completing all your adjustments and shocking overnight, retest your water the next morning. In most cases you'll find everything sitting comfortably in range. If one parameter has drifted slightly, a small correction with the appropriate BioGuard product will bring it back quickly — and with the 15-minute re-dose window, you can knock out any fine-tuning in under an hour.

Once your water tests clear across all parameters and your free chlorine is between 1 and 3 ppm — you're swimmable. That's the goal. Balanced chemistry at opening means less maintenance work all summer, lower chemical costs, and a pool that stays clear and inviting from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
