School buses are back on Hwy 169. Your pool doesn't know that. Kids who swam three hours a day just dropped to weekends and a few laps after school. That changes your chemical math. It doesn't mean you stop testing.

1 Fewer Swimmers, Less Chemical Demand

Body oils, sunscreen, and sweat all use up chlorine. A packed pool on a July afternoon burns through more chlorine than an empty one. As daily swim time drops, your pool needs less chlorine to stay balanced. That's good for your wallet. It's not a reason to stop checking your water.

2 Test Weekly, Even on Slow Weeks

Water testing costs $7 at our store, or it's included when you buy $50 or more in chemicals. Test once a week through September, even if nobody swam. Sun, heat, and rain still change your water while it sits.

3 Ease Off Shock, Keep the Filter Running

Cut back your shock schedule as swimmer numbers drop. You likely don't need it twice a week anymore. BioGuard Smart Shock and Shock Complete both let swimmers back in after just 15 minutes, so a lighter shock schedule still won't slow anyone down on a weekend swim day. Keep your filter running its full daily cycle though. Turnover keeps water clear and stops algae, and that job has nothing to do with how many people are in the pool.

Tip: Set a standing Saturday morning reminder for your water test. It fits the new routine and keeps you ahead of any changes before the school week starts.

4 Algae Doesn't Check the Calendar

August heat sticks around in Minnesota well past the first day of school. Warm water grows algae whether swimmers are in it or not. BioGuard Algae Complete stays your best defense, treating and preventing green water in one product. Back Up works as a lighter, budget option if you want something between full treatments.

5 Watch pH and CYA as Your Routine Shifts

Cyanuric acid (CYA) protects your chlorine from the sun. It doesn't drop just because fewer people are swimming. Keep an eye on pH too. Balance Pak 200 raises it, Lo 'N Slo brings it down. A steady pH keeps chlorine working right and keeps swimmers comfortable on those last warm weekends. Your pH should be between 7.4–7.6

Heads Up: A quiet pool is not a closed pool. Skipping tests because nobody's swimming is how algae and stains sneak up on you in September. Keep testing through fall, even on light-use weeks.

Do

  • Test water weekly, all season
  • Keep the filter running its full cycle
  • Ease shock frequency as bather load drops
  • Watch CYA and pH weekly

Don't

  • Assume no swimmers means no chemicals
  • Cut filter run time to save power
  • Skip tests on quiet weeks
  • Forget algae still grows in August heat
Task Peak Summer (Daily Swim) Back-to-School (Weekend Swim)
Water Test 2x per week 1x per week, minimum
Shock 1–2x per week Every 1–2 weeks
Filter Run Time 8–10 hours/day 8–10 hours/day, unchanged
Chlorine Check Daily 2–3x per week

Fewer swimmers doesn't mean less to think about. Bring in a water sample — testing is $7, or included with any $50 chemical purchase — and we'll help you dial in your fall routine. From testing to BioGuard chemicals to answering your toughest chemistry questions, we make pool ownership a joy!
