Where Should Your Pool Chemicals Live All Winter?

The pool is closed. The cover is on. Now you have a few jugs, tubs, and buckets of chemicals left over. Where do they go?
Most folks toss them in a corner of the garage and forget them. That works fine for some products. It goes badly for others. A little care now keeps your chemicals strong for spring, and keeps your family safe all winter.
1 Pick a cool, dry spot
Water is the enemy of dry chemicals. Damp air makes shock and tablets clump, and some products give off fumes when they get wet. Look for a spot that stays dry, has fresh air, and sits away from heat.

2 Keep chlorine and acid apart
This is the big one. Chlorine products and acid products must never touch. If they mix, they can make a toxic gas. Even a small spill on a shared shelf can cause trouble.
Heads up
Store Burn Out 73, Burn Out Extreme, Smart Shock, Shock Complete, Smart Sticks, and Silk Tabs on one side of the room. Store Lo 'N Slo on the other side. Keep a few feet between them, and put the chlorine on a shelf above the acid so a leak cannot drip down onto it.
Also keep shock and tablets apart from each other. Different chlorine products can react when they mix. Use a separate scoop for each product, too.
3 Know what cold does
Minnesota winters get cold fast. Dry chemicals handle that well. Liquids do not. A frozen jug can split, and some liquids lose strength after they freeze and thaw.
Tip
Liquid chlorine loses strength even when you store it well. If you have an old jug, do not count on it in spring. Plan to buy fresh.
4 Keep the original container
The label tells you what is inside, how to use it, and what to do in an emergency. Do not move product into a bucket, a jar, or a bottle that held something else. Do not reuse a pool bucket for anything else, either. A little leftover chlorine can react with whatever goes in next.
- Close every lid tight. Wipe the rim first so no dust blocks the seal.
- Set containers on a shelf, not on the floor.
- Do not stack heavy tubs on top of weak ones.
- Keep the label facing out so you can read it.
5 Keep kids and pets out
Pool chemicals are not toys, and they do not belong where small hands or curious dogs can reach. Use a high shelf or a cabinet with a lock. Check the spot again each time you add or remove a container.
If something spills
Open the door and air out the space. Scoop up dry product with a clean, dry scoop and bag it. Do not hose it down. Do not mix spills. If a product is wet, clumped, or smells very strong, call us before you throw it out. We will tell you how to handle it.
6 Plan ahead for spring
Before you shelve it all, take a quick count. Write down what you have and how much is left. In spring you will know what to buy, and you will skip the guesswork.
BioGuard tip
Most pool chemicals make you wait up to 4 hours between doses. BioGuard needs only 15 minutes. That means a faster spring opening and less waiting around.
When you open, bring a water sample to the store. Water testing costs $7, or it comes with a $50 or more chemical purchase.
Not sure what to keep, and what to toss?
Bring in your leftover chemicals and we will look them over. We will tell you what stays good, what to replace, and where to put it all. At Dolphin Pool & Spa, we make pool ownership a joy!
